Well, a huge well done to all children and parents! Thank you for your hard work with costumes, practising words and the songs with the children, as well as coming to see their performances (they were BRILLIANT!!)
Such a busy month had throughout December, I hope the holidays are as relaxing as possible.

Maths

The children have been investigating into right angles. We explored the classroom and used right angle finders to identify all the different objects which had a right angle. The children really enjoyed this task and were using great thinking skills while working with others.

English
We have wrote our own instructions on How to look after a Bog Baby, they are displayed in Year 2 and all children have passed the test- They are now certified to look after a Bog Baby, should they find one. Great instructional writing using time connectives, adding detail and a good level of understanding within their sentence structure- Super work J

Phonics
We have hard on a number of phonics this month; ow, ur and recapping all previous sounds. The children have been able to use these in both their reading and writing with growing fluency.

Topic
Christmas decoration making, don’t these hats look great?
I hope you all noticed how much work had gone into the Christmas performance- We have all worked very hard to learn our words and the songs in preparation- I am very proud of every single one in Year 2!!!

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, I hope you have a happy holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year!

Moving into December...

Maths

We have been working very hard this week to sort shapes using two different criteria. The Children have all been able to sort using a Venn Diagram and a Carrol Diagram. I am super impressed- Well done!

Phonics
This week's sound has been '-y' we have explored different '-y' vocabulary and used dictionaries to check our spelling- Great work!

Next week we are looking at 'ur'.

Decorations
Salt Dough Decorations- don't they look good?!

How can we make sure Bog Baby is happy?

Maths
We have done a great deal this week on symmetry. The children have used mirrors to reflect patterns and have created their own too. I am very pleased with their understanding and I think they have had fun creating different pictures. Well done everyone!

English
Continuing to link with our topic of Habitats, we have looked at how to take care of Bog Baby. The children have identified what made Bog Baby happy, concentrating on shelter, space, food and water.

 Reading
Great reading this week, a minimum of two books will be sent home for readers, if you do not finish both, don't worry, let me know and you can keep it for another week.

 Phonics
This week's sound has been 'or' we have explored different 'or' vocabulary and used dictionaries to check our spelling of 'or' words- Great work!

Next week we are looking at '-y' at the end of a word, when the 'y' sound changes.

Topic

Habitats- after looking at different habitats and how animals have adapted over the years to live there, the children have created their own animal. They have identified where their animal will live and how they will get shelter, space, water and food. Creative thinking!!

   Super Stars in Year 2!

Well done to Tasya, this week's star of the week. She has tried very hard to improve both her English and Maths, completing tasks independently showing amazing concentration! I loved the work on the Polar Region as a habitat, identifying the weather conditions and the animals that live there.

Maths
This week we have started on symmetry and using mirrors to reflect patterns. The children have all been able to identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes and in items around the class. We noticed that squares, butterflies and sometimes faces all have lines of symmetry.

English
Carrying on with our book- The Bog Baby, children have completed descriptions of Bog Baby using similes, I was very impressed.

"Bog Baby is blue like the sea." Well done Misha.
"The Bog Baby is little like a mouse." Great Masha
Bog Baby's tail is as sharp as a dragon's tail." Great imagery Artyom.
"Bog Baby is round and blue like a globe."  Two images used by Dasha.
"Bog Baby is round like a ball."  Good simile Vanya.
"Bog Baby has little wings like petals, very little." Added detail too, Melaniya.
"Bog Baby is small like a frog." Well done Tasya.
"Bog Baby is little like a fly." Good simile, Amalia.
"Bog Baby is soft like jelly." Good vocabulary Varya.
"Bog Baby is round like the sun." Wonderful Anastasia.

Phonics
This week's sound has been 'ar' we have explored different 'ar' vocabulary and used dictionaries to check our spelling of 'ar' words- Great work!

Topic
We have been continuing with Habitats this week. The children have been looking closely at Polar Regions, Deserts, Woodlands and Oceans. They have explored the location of these on a globe and discussed how this affects the weather climate. We noticed that the cold habitats are at the top and bottom of a globe and the hotter areas are near the equator. We then drew and wrote about the different habitats identifying which animals would live there and what they would use for shelter and what they would eat and drink.
Next week we are going to look at what makes us happy and what we need in our habitats. I am sure this will be a very interesting discussion!

Please note that homework will now be sent out on a Friday and be collected back on a Thursday. Please try and return books on time in order for books to be changed and new homework to be put into folders.

Welcome Back!
We started our week with news writing, I hear all the children have had a busy and exciting half term. It was lovely to hear about the different activities and places they have been.
I hope you have all enjoyed the snow, the children have had great fun during their outside play time sledging, building snowmen and generally playing in the snow.

English

Our lessons this week have been based around our Big Question- What makes a habitat a home?
In English we have looked at the book Bog Baby, the children have listened to the story and wrote their own predictions on what they think will happen next. Although they didn't predict correctly, there was some great writing where the children used clear sentence structure and showed their ideas using feelings and adjectives. I was impressed!

Topic

Linking in with our English, this week we have been exploring different habitats. We have  looked at different habitats and identified which animals would live there, providing that they have shelter, space, food and water.
This will be moving on to next week's learning and we will be looking at what humans need in their habitats to ensure we are healthy and happy too.

Maths

In Maths we have been exploring 2D shapes and exploring their properties. The children have been able to identify shapes using mathematical vocabulary- corners, sides, equal and length to distinguish between different 2D shapes. They have used their understanding to follow a key to colour in a picture. Well done!

Saturday 5 November 2016

Due to technical issue this post is backdated to Halloween week. I apologies for any inconvenience.

                                                     Happy Halloween!!

With Halloween fast approaching, this week has held a spooky theme! Children have been completing English and Topic activities through our week's celebration and in Maths we have had snappy challenges.

English

In year 2 we have been concentrating on the 'igh' sound within words, we have explored words which include this; night, fright, bright, along with many more. The children have used dictionaries to identify and check with their spellings for some trickier igh words and have done some brilliant reading using all their phonics knowledge.

The children have been writing their own acrostic poetry using HALLOWEEN as the title and focus. These turned out really creative as we had to think of a spooky word to represent each of the letters in our title. Amazing thinking!!

Topic

We started our week looking at spooky scenes, one being a house on the top of a hill with a colourful sky. From this we created our own Halloween house scenes. We had to start by creating the background using water paints and blending colours, moving on we designed our house and scene around using only black paper in order to create a silhouette effect. The children all enjoyed adding their own detail and the final pieces looked great!

Maths
Looking at greater than and less than as our mathematical vocabulary, we used alligators to explore the < and > symbols. All children gained a good understanding of how to use their symbols and were able to use to compare two and three digit numbers with confidence.
Well done everyone!

Fun Time at Onegino- Halloween celebration.

Amazing work with the costumes, all children looked brilliant!

Disco fun- super dancing!

Pin the hat on the witch, this was trickier than it looks.

Pumpkin Carving.

I hope everyone has enjoyed Halloween week as much as I have. I wish you all a happy half term and I look forward to hearing lots of stories when we return to school for the remainder of the Autumn term.

The Autumn Term

This term we have been very busy, our topics so far have been;  All About Me, Life Cycles and Seasons. We have explored whether the tallest people jump the highest and found out that height doesn't always mean that they can jump the highest. We have also explored different life cycles, animals and humans as well as exploring the changes in the seasons. We noticed the changes in colours and have completed observational drawings and pictures of leaves and autumn scenery.

A lovely picture showing a rainy day. Great mixing of only primary colours here.

A wonderful capture of an Autumn tree, again, only using primary colours.

Everyone has been trying their best and have enjoyed their learning, thank you for the brilliant effort!

The Experimentarium

A very busy and fun day had by all at the Experimentarium. We all learnt a great deal about the world around us and how things work.
Some of the activities were a little scary, like the Dark Room and the Labyrinth Room of Mirrors, where we got a little confused. We looked at the electric ball and looked at how electricity can flow using us as conductors. The children also enjoyed The Water Room, using boats to explore how water travels.

I want to say a big thank you to all of the children, they were well behaved using manners and good listening throughout the day.
