How can we make sure Bog Baby is happy?

Maths

We have done a great deal this week on symmetry. The children have used mirrors to reflect patterns and have created their own too. I am very pleased with their understanding and I think they have had fun creating different pictures. Well done everyone!

 

English

Continuing to link with our topic of Habitats, we have looked at how to take care of Bog Baby. The children have identified what made Bog Baby happy, concentrating on shelter, space, food and water. 

 Reading 

Great reading this week, a minimum of two books will be sent home for readers, if you do not finish both, don't worry, let me know and you can keep it for another week. 

 Phonics

This week's sound has been 'or' we have explored different 'or' vocabulary and used dictionaries to check our spelling of 'or' words- Great work!

Next week we are looking at '-y' at the end of a word, when the 'y' sound changes.

Topic

Habitats- after looking at different habitats and how animals have adapted over the years to live there, the children have created their own animal. They have identified where their animal will live and how they will get shelter, space, water and food. Creative thinking!!

   Super Stars in Year 2!

    Well done to Tasya, this week's star of the week. She has tried very hard to improve both her English and Maths, completing tasks independently showing amazing concentration! I loved the work on the Polar Region as a habitat, identifying the weather conditions and the animals that live there.

Maths

This week we have started on symmetry and using mirrors to reflect patterns. The children have all been able to identify lines of symmetry in 2D shapes and in items around the class. We noticed that squares, butterflies and sometimes faces all have lines of symmetry. 

English

Carrying on with our book- The Bog Baby, children have completed descriptions of Bog Baby using similes, I was very impressed.

Topic

   We have been continuing with Habitats this week. The children have been looking closely at Polar Regions, Deserts, Woodlands and Oceans. They have explored the location of these on a globe and discussed how this affects the weather climate. We noticed that the cold habitats are at the top and bottom of a globe and the hotter areas are near the equator. We then drew and wrote about the different habitats identifying which animals would live there and what they would use for shelter and what they would eat and drink. 

   Next week we are going to look at what makes us happy and what we need in our habitats. I am sure this will be a very interesting discussion!

Welcome Back!

We started our week with news writing, I hear all the children have had a busy and exciting half term. It was lovely to hear about the different activities and places they have been.
I hope you have all enjoyed the snow, the children have had great fun during their outside play time sledging, building snowmen and generally playing in the snow.

English

Our lessons this week have been based around our Big Question- What makes a habitat a home?
In English we have looked at the book Bog Baby, the children have listened to the story and wrote their own predictions on what they think will happen next. Although they didn't predict correctly, there was some great writing where the children used clear sentence structure and showed their ideas using feelings and adjectives. I was impressed!





















Topic

Linking in with our English, this week we have been exploring different habitats. We have  looked at different habitats and identified which animals would live there, providing that they have shelter, space, food and water.
This will be moving on to next week's learning and we will be looking at what humans need in their habitats to ensure we are healthy and happy too.


Maths

In Maths we have been exploring 2D shapes and exploring their properties. The children have been able to identify shapes using mathematical vocabulary- corners, sides, equal and length to distinguish between different 2D shapes. They have used their understanding to follow a key to colour in a picture. Well done!

                                                     Happy Halloween!!

With Halloween fast approaching, this week has held a spooky theme! Children have been completing English and Topic activities through our week's celebration and in Maths we have had snappy challenges.

English

   In year 2 we have been concentrating on the 'igh' sound within words, we have explored words which include this; night, fright, bright, along with many more. The children have used dictionaries to identify and check with their spellings for some trickier igh words and have done some brilliant reading using all their phonics knowledge.

   The children have been writing their own acrostic poetry using HALLOWEEN as the title and focus. These turned out really creative as we had to think of a spooky word to represent each of the letters in our title. Amazing thinking!!



























Topic

    We started our week looking at spooky scenes, one being a house on the top of a hill with a colourful sky. From this we created our own Halloween house scenes. We had to start by creating the background using water paints and blending colours, moving on we designed our house and scene around using only black paper in order to create a silhouette effect. The children all enjoyed adding their own detail and the final pieces looked great!

Maths
    Looking at greater than and less than as our mathematical vocabulary, we used alligators to explore the < and > symbols. All children gained a good understanding of how to use their symbols and were able to use to compare two and three digit numbers with confidence.
